MBIA provides financial guarantees to the global public and structured finance markets through its two primary operating subsidiaries: National Public Finance and MBIA Insurance Corporation. The policies written typically provide unconditional and irrevocable guarantees on the payment of principal and interest on guaranteed obligations. S&P's downgrade of National Public Finance Guarantee Corp to 'A' from 'AA-' makes it virtually impossible for National to profitability write new business. As a result, the unit was placed into runoff in mid-2017. MBIA Insurance Corp is expected to remain in run-off for the foreseeable future. (11 Sep 2018)
