DBS Group

DBS was established in 1968 as a development bank to finance the govt's economic development objectives. It was subsequently privatized & is now run on commercial terms, though the Govt of Singapore retains an indirect stake through its investment vehicle Temasek (29%). In 1998 DBS moved beyond its wholesale bank origins with the acquisition of Posb that brought along a large mass market customer base, mainly for deposits. In 2001 it acquired the former Dao Heng Bank in Hong Kong and in 2008 it acquired part of the failed Bowa Bank in Taiwan, to supplement its Greater China operations. DBS has a subsidiary in China with 35 branches/sub-branches and in India, it has the largest presence of the Singapore banks with 12 branches. In Indonesia, it has a 99%-owned subsidiary, PT Bank DBS Indonesia which has a network of 40 branches in 11 cities. DBS has been targeting growth in corporate, SME and retail banking, including private banking and is currently integrating ANZ's Asian retail business. (22 May 2018)
